Obama Nominates Gay Judge

By Charlotte Robinson, February 08, 2013
It’s amazing to think that in 2013 it’s actually historic that if approved Todd Hughes would become the first openly gay U.S. Appeals Court Judge. Hughes is currently Deputy Director of the Commercial Litigation Branch of the Civil Division at the United States Department of Justice. You have to hope that if this happens it would be an inspiration for probably hundreds of Judges across America to finally come out. Chuck Wolfe, President & CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund & Institute stated, "If confirmed, Todd Hughes would become the first openly gay federal appeals court judge in U.S. history. His nomination is a testament to the expanding opportunities for openly LGBT Americans who want to serve their country & to the President's respect for the depth of talent & experience within the LGBT community. We look forward to his confirmation by the U.S. Senate." Hughes a Harvard & Duke alumni has been with the Justice Department since 2007. He was also an adjunct lecturer in law with the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law & an instructor for Duke University’s writing program. Hopefully he will be confirmed. Remember in 2011 Edward DuMont also an openly gay man was nominated by Obama to the federal appellate court but withdrew his nomination after his nomination was stalled for nearly two years. Updates to Come...:)
