Melissa Etheridge & Adam Lambert set the tone opening the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Hilton Midtown in New York on Saturday night. Ross Mathews hosted the event & Melissa Etheridge & Adam Lambert performed a duet to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Etheridge’s breakthrough album YES I AM by performing an unforgettable new arrangement of her song "I'm The Only One." The Excellence in Media Award went to director Ava DuVernay presented by Senator Cory Booker & the
Vito Russo Award went to actress Samira Wiley present by Alexis Bledel. Special Recognition Award of "Smile" by Jay-Z featuring Gloria Carter was accepted by Ms. Gloria Carter & Outstanding Film – Wide Release was won by Sony Pictures Classics “Call Me By Your Name” & was accepted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter James Ivory & producer Peter Spears. Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO stated,
“GLAAD is working to ensure the spirit of unity & intersectionality that was celebrated tonight extends throughout the year. Tonight’s award recipients are the front lines to ensuring that LGBTQ acceptance moves forward in a political & cultural climate that is working against us.” At the event, celebrities sported blue “&” pins for GLAAD’s Together movement representing GLAAD’s work on intersectional issues including immigration, racial justice, women’s rights & LGBTQ acceptance. This symbol represents the power of solidarity & great accomplishments that occur when marginalized community groups including women, Muslims, immigrants & LGBTQ people – resist together.
