Pro Gay Massachusetts Spirit

By Charlotte Robinson, October 24, 2011
Over the weekend the Patrick family, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Diane Patrick & daughters Sarah & Katherine Patrick received the 2011 Spirit of Justice Award from GLAD (Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders). Rick McCarthy, GLAD Board President stated, “We’re honoring the whole family for their collective contribution to the advancement of equality for LGBT people. At a time when we are all working to create a bright future & a hopeful present for LGBT youth, the Patricks have set a significant & inspiring example of a family that practices what they preach.” The award was presented at the 12th annual Spirit of Justice Award Dinner on Friday, October 21st at the Boston Marriott Copley Hotel. Then on Saturday AM Katherine & Sarah Patrick were joined by members of the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders at the Harriet Tubman House in Boston. The concept was to talk about coming out & the role family & political leadership plays in making the world a better place for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender youth.

I think it’s important to live your life openly and honestly if you can. I think we come from a place of privilege for having such a supportive environment that I think it’s my responsibility now to push that message further. Sometimes it's great. Sometimes it's not so great. But the point is we're having that conversation and I'm willing to have that conversation…even if comes at it saying ‘I don't understand this.’
