The Push For No Chick-fil-A In UK

By Charlotte Robinson, October 21, 2019
The notorious anti-LGBTQ fast food franchise Chick-fil-A opened their first store at The Oracle shopping center in Reading, UK earlier this month & is set to close after faced with continual protests over the chain's anti-LGBTQ stance. UK human rights activist Peter Tatchell stated, “This is a great victory. It sends a warning to big corporations that they cannot get away with funding anti-LGBT+ hate groups. I hope it will deter others. Huge congratulations & thanks to the many LGBT+ activists who helped get this result. They show the power of collective action.” The Oracle stated "We always look to introduce new concepts for our customers, however, we have decided on this occasion that the right thing to do is to only allow Chick-fil-A to trade with us for the initial six-month pilot period & not to extend the lease any further." Chick-fil-A had previously misled the BBC stating, “Our giving has always focused on youth & education. We have never donated with the purpose of supporting a social or political agenda.” The truth of the matter is as of 2018 Chick fil-A reportedly continues to donate to anti-LGBT groups such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which opposes marriage equality & restricts participation by our LGBTQ youth. When Chick-fil-A attempted to open in Boston, MA in 2012 the late Boston Mayor Thomas Menino stated, “There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail & no place for your company alongside it." However outside of Boston Chick-fil-A does exist & hopefully Massachusetts will realize there’s no room for hate in this state. Peter Tatchell concluded, “I hope the US will follow suit & drive this bigoted chain out of business. Chick-fil-A’s opposition to LGBT+ equality merits a boycott by contractors & consumers.”
