Wear Purple For Spirit Day October 20th

By Charlotte Robinson, October 20, 2011
Today October 20th join the movement with millions of dedicated Americans & wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender (LGBT) youth to speak out against bullying. LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Numerous teens continue to take their own lives after facing bullying incidents. Just last weekend a gay 15-year-old boy in Ottawa, Canada, killed himself after suffering years of depression & bullying. Brittany McMillan, a teen herself started Spirit Day last year in response to the young people who have killed themselves. Observed annually on October 20th, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals & celebs wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. This year, MTV will turn their logo purple in support of Spirit Day. This is only the second time in the network’s 30 year history they are changing the logo for a cause. Celebs including Ricky Martin, Julianne Moore, Jersey Shore cast members, Chaz Bono & many more will be wearing purple. Hosts of ABC's Good Morning America, CNBC, E!, Wendy Williams & Conan O’Brien will also go purple, among others. To participate "go purple" today October 20th as we work to create a world in which our LGBT teens are celebrated & accepted for who they are. Updates to Come...:)
