Gay Marriage Celebrates 8th Anniversary

By Charlotte Robinson, May 17, 2012
This is the 8th anniversary of the legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts. In 2004 Massachusetts pioneered gay marriage in this country, which is now legal in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa, New York, & Washington D.C. Thousands of gay couples have legally tied the knot in Massachusetts. We wish you the best & thank you for your courage to love. Though the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act has been found unconstitutional in the courts DOMA continues to deny our legally married gay couples 1,138 federal rights of marriage. This also affects all our gay & lesbian service members. Many people assume that with the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," gay & lesbian service members are finally being treated fairly & equally but they're not. DOMA forces the military to treat legally married gay & lesbian service members & their families differently from straight service members & denies these military families crucial support & protection provided to all other married couples. Now that President Obama has come out in support of marriage equality the tide has changed forever. Public opinion polls consistently show that Americans favor gay marriage. We urge Congress & all states with discriminatory laws on their books to stand for justice & equality for all people, as the Constitution requires & work together to uphold the American tradition of fairness & equality by ending marriage discrimination. Updates to Come...:)
