LGBT Inclusive State of the Union

By Charlotte Robinson, January 13, 2016
Listening to President Obama’s last State of the Union Address should be a wake-up call for our LGBT community. The speech was LGBT inclusive as it has been for the last 8 years but once he leaves office next year unless a Democratic candidate becomes president it’s unlikely that any progress will happen for our community & unfortunately we could see a decline in the equality we worked so hard for. The strongest reference to our LGBT community came near the end of the speech when Obama stated, “It’s the son who finds the courage to come out as who he is & the father whose love for that son overrides everything he’s been taught.” There were also additional references a bit earlier including marriage equality stating, “how we secured the freedom in every state to marry the person we love.” Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund concluded, “Tonight the president reminded all of us of our core American values of dignity & mutual respect—in what is a fiercely divisive political climate. A climate that has included an unprecedented deluge of hate speech against LGBTQ people, Muslims, undocumented immigrants & other groups. He denounced the politics of hatred & divisiveness with the evidence of his seven years in office—better access to health care, millions of new good-paying jobs, the potential of a world without AIDS, more LGBTQ equality & a pathway to equity for all. He championed the restoration of vital voting rights & the opportunity for a cure for cancer. An impressive record & a strong foundation for his successor to build on, whomever that might be. With one more year left, much remains to be done to secure the promise of freedom for all people in this country—let’s make it count.”

Obama's inclusion of LGBT equality in his speeches has always made me feel comfortable and safe. BUT, with candidates like Ted Cruz and other hate mongers in the race....I heard Obama refer to LGBT equality last night and it felt shaky in light of the current lunacy called campaigning for the Presidency.

Last night, I was honored to attend President Obama’s final State of the Union address. I am proud to support our President, who has brought us back from economic collapse, built a brighter, cleaner energy future, and helped ensure marriage equality for all. I am inspired by the vision he laid for our future. And now it’s time to stand with him to make that vision a reality.

Let's stand with him-

* To build an economy that raises everyone up...
* To end the heroin and opioid epidemic – a public health crisis that has taken far too many lives...
* To help students who are hamstrung by debt...
* To take dangerous guns out of the hands of dangerous people...
* To support smart, fair criminal justice reforms to help people rebuild their lives...
* And to ensure equal pay for equal work.

I am grateful to Congressman Richie Neal for bringing me as his guest to the SOTU. I came back from Washington D.C. more inspired and committed than ever to act and work together with even greater urgency. I hope you are too. The time to act is now. I hope you’ll join me.

Thank you for all you do and thank you, President Obama!
